Licensing of the podcast

Filed under: Uncategorized

A few people have asked what license Wikipedia Weekly is available under and to be frank, we never really worried about sticking a license tag on things, we just assumed people would assume it’d be free and use snippets as they so desire.

To clear up confusion, I’ve but the license “tags” in the footer. You get your choice of Creative Commons By Attribution Share-Alike or the GFDL - feel free to use sound bites for your own material.

If you require the original sound files we used (from the recording) - let us know and we’ll see if we can upload them (they’re huge)

Daveydweeb’s audio tutorial now online

Wednesday August 08th 2007, 3:24 am
Filed under: Video, Wikimania

It took days to compress the file acceptably and to upload it on various unstable connections, but Daveydweeb’s audio tutorial is now online. The video below is compressed into H.264/AVC video, which should play in most media players, and I’ll get a Theora version online if I’m ever able to.

Enjoy! :)

Wrapping up Wikimania

Sunday August 05th 2007, 3:19 pm
Filed under: Wikimania, Wikipedia

I’ll take a moment from the normal course of events to post a person wrap-up of Wikimania 2007. My plane for Sydney leaves in twenty minutes, so I only really have a few minutes to write up some notes on the conference.

First and foremost, the last five days have seen 1,352 downloads from either WikipediaWeekly.com, or, in the case of my lightning talk video, YouTube. Tawker provided us with a very impressive internet backbone, and I’m proud to say a number of things about it: that it was insanely fast, that it was utterly reliable, that we never even scratched the surface of its capabilities, and that it allowed us to serve a record amount of content in the given time period.

For reference, that’s an average of one download every eleven minutes, with a peak of one every five minutes or so. For a podcast as esoteric as ours, that’s impressive.

Secondly, I’ll take a moment to thank the rest of the podcasting crew. Andrew Lih (who, despite what his profile picture would have you believe, no longer sports a Chairman Mao hairdo) provided us with an amazing host and driving force, while Liam Wyatt proved to be a proficient interviewer and efficient content updater each time we released an episode. MessedRocker was a fun and helpful co-panelist, and JamesF… well, he didn’t mock me all the time. ;)

Thanks to everyone who said “hi” to us in our messy little corner, and especially to those who stole JamesF’s wafer sticks at my insistence.

We’re back again, this time with Episode 26 in the form of our final Morning Update for the Wikimania 2007 conference! In this episode, we discuss Brion Vibber’s Single User Login talk today, as well as yesterday’s activities and the Wikimania Party (including the adventures of a certain cartoon mascot).

Liam and Andrew caught up with Evan from WikiTravel today, to talk to him about the non-WMF Wiki project. They asked about the future of WikiTravel, how it differs from the Wikimedia Foundation’s projects, and the release of Kei.ki, his new parenting-based Wiki.

Audio tutorial on its way up

Sunday August 05th 2007, 4:50 am
Filed under: Video, Wikimania, Wikipedia

I presented for the second time yesterday, but instead of a five minute lightning talk I was given an hour to give a summary-style tutorial on audio production using Audacity. The talk was recorded, both by the organisers and by Andrew, so I’ve encoded the footage for publication and it’s on the way up now.

Unfortunately, the sound is terrible, but it’ll have to do. Encoding on a 1.33 Ghz iBook G4 is not fun. ;)

On another note, Adam from FLOSSManuals.net spoke up at the end of the talk to point out the existence of the Audacity manual from that site. The manual is a wiki, so I’ll be adding a section on voice editing when I have the time, hopefully before the next printing (which Adam tells me is next week).

UPDATE: The slides for this presentation are now online, under a Creative Commons license.

Yesterday, Daveydweeb was the second speaker at the Friday Lightning Talks session of Wikimania 2007. He introduced the Wikipedia Weekly podcasting project to the audience, and now we’ve put the video online as a bonus.

The MPEG version (download here) is approximately 50MB, and plays at 640×480 resolution (XVid codec may be required). You can find the Ogg Theora version here, and the YouTube version here.

Enjoy!

Wikimania Day 2: Ward Cunningham Interview

Saturday August 04th 2007, 7:48 am
Filed under: Audio, Episodes, MP3, Wikimania, Wikipedia

This morning Liam Wyatt and Andrew Lih were able to catch up with Ward Cunningham, the creator of the very first wiki, and talk to him about about his ideas on the meaning and role of the wiki, the Wikimania 2007 conference, and his current projects. It makes for interesting listening.

Update: The MP3 was corrupted when uploaded. I’m (slowly) re-uploading the file now, it should work fine once this is completed in a few minutes.

Wikimania Day 1: Morning Update

Friday August 03rd 2007, 8:38 am
Filed under: Audio, Episodes, MP3, Wikimania, Wikipedia

The first day of Wikimania 2007 is well underway, and we’ve been hard at work (really!) to cover the morning’s events. In episode 23, we cover:

1. the opening keynote presentation given by Anthere and introduced by Jimmy Wales;
2. the Wikimedia Foundation press conference;
3. “Where have the content creators gone?” by Seth Anthony, “The conscientious copyfighter” by Kat Walsh, and other opening sessions;
4. the conference schwag.

In addition, we’re introducing a new “vox populi” segment, in which we give Wikimania attendees a chance to participate in the release of each morning episode. This episode, we ask them about themselves, their experiences with Wikipedia, and how they became involved with the project.

We’ll try to have another episode up tonight, with still more news on the conference. Until then, enjoy episode 23!
